I’m a fellow Irish, Catholic St Louis girl and I have been praying for Lauren and cheering her on from afar throughout her recovery. I thought I knew the story well, from the documentary, and from the Facebook page but this book delivers far more information about this remarkable young woman and her family. It is so well written and readable. I don’t have a loved one facing a brain injury but the steps in this book can apply to so many tough situations in this life. Beautifully written. : I remember standing in Target in 2013 when I heard the news that Lauren Murphy had been in a horrific and nearly fatal accident. You see when you grow up in Florissant, MO eveyone knows eveyone and the Murphy family was no exception. Lauren was known for her beauty, her confidence and her recent move to NYC with her best friend and their Life of LuCy’s blog. My girlfriends LOVED reading it and we totally lived vicariously through the Lucy’s! So when I heard about the accident my heart broke for Lauren and her family. Colleen told Lauren and the entire Murphy family's story in such a relatable way. I found myself giggling while reading a tragic and very personal story. The honesty and self-deprecating humor was the perfect counterpoint to a very difficult story. As an alumnae of Lauren's high school, I have followed her progress closely. Full disclosure: I have two of Lauren's MURPHYS DON'T QUIT wristbands. Both times that I requested a wristband, Lauren sent back a personal THANK YOU. How's that for progress and raising a spectacular daughter?! Thank you Colleen, Lauren, and Murphy family for being so vulnerable and sharing your story. As a mom I’ve wondered how I would react in this type of situation. I hope I would be like Colleen, her perseverance is inspiring and humor is refreshing. After reading this book I am in awe of the entire family and how they all rallied to help Lauren gain back her life. Be ready to laugh, cry and laugh and cry at the same time. This family is special. This book is special. Don’t miss your chance to be motivated to push through any situation you might be in where the outcome seems bleak, because if Lauren can do it, so can you. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Shequita -- Kindness is Free! : Vulnerable. Heartbreaking. Inspiring! I’ve never met the Murphy family, but I’ve been following Lauren’s story from afar since 2013. We are the same age and have a similar adoration for NYC. Although I have kept up with the family’s updates over the years, Colleen tells this story with an incredible voice that displays the kind of vulnerability that is real, raw, and hits you like you’re living it with her. While there are some incredibly gut wrenching moments, Colleen tells Lauren’s story with the kind of humor that one would need to survive the journey her family has been through. I absolutely perfected the silent cry while reading this, but also had many belly laugh moments. Aphasia is a beast, but this story shows that there is hope! It was hard to put this one down. I laughed, I cried, I ate a lot of cupcakes, and hugged my kids a little tighter. Lauren is such an inspiration and embodies the family slogan "Murphy's Don't Quit".
