Melissa has done such an amazing job of explaining something that is just so grand and intricate at the same time. Trying to understand how one disease can manifest in so many ways and how to effectively work with our loved ones or at least understand what is truly beyond their control. Thank you for this in depth view. I feel so much more empowered to speak directly with my Grammie's doctor and push for at least a Mini Cog as every time we visit with him, he says to take Vitamin B and do puzzles. My Grammie asks me the same question 2 or 3 times in a conversation, but she smiles at the doctor and tells him, "I'm doing well" and he believes her. Caring for those affected my the various forms of dementia is a lot of what I do. The best way to learn about these conditions and the different problems families encounter with dementia is through the lives and stories of others. The prevalence of dementia among our society is growing and the trends will continue. These stories that illustrate the symptoms and issues face will help anyone who reads this. Difficult and complex topics and conditions are shared in a way that is well understood by those who do not have a clinical background. In the case studies, there are similarities to my concerns and experiences with my mother and mother-in-law who suffered from dementia in their latter years. The author has case studies and then explanations and recommendations on best practices for caregivers. There is also a great list of resources available. Having to deal with my mother from long distance, I know how difficult that is and it's great to find out what is available to make it easier. I would recommend her book to anyone who needs to understand and prepare for a life caring for someone who has memory issues, brain injury or dementia. I loved her stories about her clients and how she lovingly uses "therapeutic fibs" to them to keep them calm and happy. Thank you for breaking down different types of care facilities and the meaning behind the levels of Medicare/health insurance and the legal documents to prepare. Great information!!!
